.: Information and Settings : Changing Your E-Mail Account's Username :.

The following instructions will help you set up your e-mail program after our server change on November 17, 2004. If you are using a program not listed here or are using a Macintosh computer, please call us at 515-382-2124.

Outlook Express/Outlook 98/Outlook 2000

  1. With the program open, go to the top and click Tools, then click Accounts. A new window will open.
  2. In the Internet Accounts window, click the Mail tab.
  3. You should now see the e-mail accounts which are set up on your computer. If you only have one MidIowa Net e-mail address, you should only see one; if you have multiple addresses, you will see multiple accounts (all of which will need to be changed). To make the change, highlight the account you would like to change, then click the Properties button on the right side. A new window will open.
  4. In the new window that opens, click the Servers tab at the top.
  5. On this screen, near the bottom it will say Account name and you should see your username. On the 17th, the format of this will need to be changed to read as yourusername@midiowa.net (your e-mail address, typed in all lower-case letters).
  6. Once you have changed the Account name, you should see a section that says Outgoing Mail Server. Put a checkmark in the box that says, My server requires authentication, then click the Settings button on the right. A new window will open.
  7. In the new window that opens, dot the use same settings as my incoming mail server option. The Log on using secure password authentication box should not be checked. Go ahead and click the OK button, then at your account properties window, click the Apply button, then the OK button. At the Internet Accounts window, click the Close button.
  8. Your Outlook Express, Outlook 98, or Outlook 2000 should now be successfully set up when the server change is made.

Outlook XP

  1. With Outlook XP open, go to the top and click Tools, then click E-Mail Accounts. A new window will open.
  2. On this new window, you should see the option View or change existing e-mail accounts. Put a dot in this one, then click the Next button.
  3. This screen will show you all the e-mail accounts you have set up on your computer. (If you have multiple accounts, you will need to be sure that each one is changed.) Highlight the account you would like to change, then click the Change button to the right. Your screen should change.
  4. In the bottom-left portion of the screen, you should see a User Name field which has your username in it. Add @midiowa.net to the end of the username (minus the quotes).
  5. Next, click the More Settings… button in the bottom-right corner. A new window will open.
  6. In the new window, click the Outgoing Server tab. Make sure My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication is checked. Below that, you will want to dot Use same settings as my incoming mail server. Click the OK button and the window will close. In the current window, the Next button should now be available; click it.
  7. You will now be brought to the screen with your account(s) listed. If you have multiple accounts, go ahead and change each of them. If not, click the Finish button. Your Outlook XP should now be configured for the server switch.

Netscape 7+

  1. Open up the mail portion of the Netscape program.
  2. Once it has opened, click Edit, then click Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings. A new window will open.
  3. On the left-hand side you should see a list of items/categories, the top one being your e-mail address. If you see a + sign to the left of it, click it; if it's a minus sign, you don't need to click anything.
  4. Under your e-mail address, you should see Server Settings. The screen to the right will change, and you will see a User Name field. This needs to be changed to the yourusername@midiowa.net format (all in lower-case letters).
  5. Next click the Outgoing Server (SMTP) category found below. Make sure Use name and password is checked. In the User Name field, type in your MidIowa Net e-mail address. Please note that the first time you go to send e-mail after making this change, you may be prompted to type in your password. After the first time, this should not continue.
  6. Click the OK button, and your Netscape mail should be set up for the new server.

All Other Email Programs

If you are using another e-mail program and are familiar with how to get into the account settings, please feel free to make the change on your own. Just remember that the Account Name/Username needs to be changed: Instead of just using only your user name, you will be using your full e-mail address in all lower-case letters. In addition, make sure your e-mail program's option to use a username and password when sending e-mail is selected and that the appropriate information is entered in.

If you are using another e-mail program and would like assistance, or if you have problems with the programs above, please feel free to call us at 382-2124. Our hours are from 2 p.m. - 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Saturday. You may also e-mail us before the 17th, but after that date if the changes are not made to your e-mail program it will no longer function correctly until the correct changes are made.
