For the Son of Man also came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. (Mark 10:45)

Community Service

The Good Samaritan Fund

This is a cooperative ministry of all the Christian congregations in Nevada. It provides emergency assistance and counseling for help to anyone who requests it. Operated by the staff of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Memorial provides $20/month to help St. Patrick's with its costs. To sign-up to make one of the monthly donations, see the forms in the entry hallway by the office or simply call the church office. All loose offerings on the second Sunday of the month are designated for direct help to persons who come for Good Samaritan assistance.

The Community Cupboard

Food for the hungry of Story County. Donations of dried and canned foods are always welcome. Your cash donations go farther through the per pound pricing of the Central Iowa Food Cooperative. You may leave your food donations in the grocery basket just inside the north door of Memorial.

The Dorcas Fund

This fund cares for members of Memorial who have emergency financial needs. $250 may be provided a family in any 12-month period. This quiet ministry is undertaken by the pastors, and benefits many households at Memorial with confidentiality and dignity. All loose offerings on the third Sunday of the month are designated to the Dorcas Fund.

Human Services Projects, 2000

The Human Services Team invites members of Memorial to become involved in supporting Project Home Mission and Story County Habitat for Humanity. Project Home Mission is under the direction of Mid-Iowa Community Action (MICA). Memorial sponsors two Nevada families with economic need.

CROP Walk

The Church World Service - CROP Walk against Hunger is an annual ecumenical event in Nevada. This year's walk was held August 26, 2000.

Global Mission

ELCA World Hunger Appeal

The World Hunger Appeal of our church is highly regarded for its minimal administrative costs and very effective work at self-help food production and distribution. The ELCA World Hunger Appeal receives our loose offerings and special donations the first Sunday of every month.

Quilts/Lutheran World Relief Projects

Whether it is a quilt for a refugee, food for drought-stricken countries, health kits or school kits for children in poverty, or a layette for an infant, the ministry of Lutheran World Relief is compassionate and personal. Memorial Lutheran members work each month to make quilts and other LWR kits on the second Thursday of the month with two work sessions at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Donations of quilt materials and kit materials are always welcome. Contact Kathy Bergmann for more information.

Companion Congregation

The Pare Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania is our companion synod, and we are now undertaking steps to have a companion congregation in Tanzania. This is not a program of financial contribution, but an equal exchange of prayers, ideas, encouragement and support between the Lutherans of Tanzania and Iowa. Our new Church in the World Committee is pursuing this ministry.

Lutheran Disaster Response

A cooperative program of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, Lutheran Disaster Response designates immediate relief funds and supplies for domestic disasters such as floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, and other extraordinary calamities (including relief to families affected by the farm crisis). Lutheran Disaster Response opportunities are provided to members as they develop.
